I'm researching my husband's family, starting with his 94-year-old grandmother, Lillian Ostrosky Kessler Slawsky. She's always been called "Tillie."
Tillie was 2 when she and her mother and younger brother Sam came to New York from "Kiev" (it's always Kiev, but then again, I say I live in Washington, DC, when I live in a 'burb!) Her father was Meier, his mother was Rosa, and they were all sponsored by someone married to Meier's sister, Hannah (the last name isn't clear in any records--Oginski or Ogivsky or Oqunsky or something along those lines).
Meier's Ellis Island records say "Ostrofsky," while Rosa's say "Ostrowska", so who knows what the real spelling was?
They all ended up in Albany, NY, where Meier worked as a tailor.
Did you see the post from Harry Ostrofsky, who talked about a Moishe Ostrofsky?Could this be the same person as yours?
Looking forward to hearing about your family, Sandra
