re:TENNESSEE PORTER OUTLAW married JAMES FRANKLIN SUMMERS (also occasionally spelled Somers and Sommers on her obit)
It has been a while since I asked about our ggg grandmother, so I thought I would put out her information again.
For some reason we have not been able to find her parents, siblings, place of birth, nothing, zip, nada...
Here are the things we do know:
She married our ggg grandfather, JAMES FRANKLIN SUMMERS, on July 4, 1847 in STEWART COUNTY, TN. (they had applied for the license on July 3, 1847 according to the State record)
According to the document the State of TN sent us: Mr. William H. Pully and Mary C. Porter applied for their marriage license the day before she and Mr. Summers applied (July 2, 1847)...I have wondered if this "Mary C. Porter" was in any way related to our ggg grandmother.
We do not know if our ggg grandmother had been married before, i.e. if Outlaw was a maiden name or if Porter was just a middle name or what. Not a clue there either. We have never found any relatives of her's that appeared to come and visit by either name of PORTER or OUTLAW.
I have found one child of TPO's daughters (Rebecca Jane Francis Summers) who later married into an OUTLAW connection (I found a Sarah Francis Outlaw who had been married to a Parchman...and of course, TPO's daughter, Rebecca Jane Francis Summers had married WILLIAM H. PARCHMAN m. Feb 10, 1874)), but I can't find anything out on this Sarah Francis Outlaw except that she was from up close to/or in KY depending on where the state boundry was that year... But that is the only OUTLAW connection I have found myself, personally.
I had wondered if this "Sarah Francis Outlaw" could possibly have been a sister or cousin or something of TPO - especially since the last names were the same (Outlaw) and the middle name of "Francis" was same for Sarah and TPO's dau, Rebecca.
TPO had at least 13 children w/Mr. Summers.
She is buried at the family home site at Spring Creek outside Waverly, TN.
We have recently obtained a couple of obits on TPO and strangely they appear not very "warm".It would almost appear the burial was a private one.But that may just be my interpretation. It appears a lay preacher A. J. Turner did her service...and as he writes:"By her request, the writer conducted the burial services at her home.A. J. Turner"Anyway, her obit gives no clue as to her family or origination. ...also reports from people who have viewed her tombstone say it appears fairly new - it is unknown if it is the original tombstone. It does not have her date of death on it.I obtained the date, December 30, from the library in Waverly. If anyone knows who may have put up this new-appearing tombstone I would love to know and thank them.
Family verbal history has it that she is possibly part indian.
There is a picture of her and Mr. Summers on the OUTLAW board that GrannyJean has. She was a very petite and pretty woman.
She died Dec 30, 1902 in HUMPHREYS COUNTY, TN.
According to the blurb in Goodspeeds for Humphreys County, it notes that she was born Nov 17, 1823; however I have seen no records to substantiate that and I do not know where Goodspeeds is getting their information.
HELP...if anyone knows anything of her past or family, we could sure use a break here. Thanks so much.
