Must have been an oversight on my part. That's not what I meant, I don't think.
My main body of notes says that the name was originally Aunby, then Onby, etc. My main point was probably that the most correct American spelling after Arthur's day, is Ownbey, because that was the most phonecically close to the original... and that Owenby developed much later, (often as an error on the part of Census takers and other clerks, and not the Ownbeys.) Oddly, Owenby is now the prevaling "official" form, or at least the one most recognized; (i.e., there is no "Ownbey" Forum on FenForum, but rather an Owenby Forum!)
