Pvt. William R. Owings, Co. A., 26th Alabama Infantry
I am trying to find out what happened to Pvt. William R. Owings of the 26th Alabama. This is what I have of him but need more!
Born Anderson District, South Carolina and enlisted August 3, 1861. Wounded at Gettysburg July 1-3, 1863 and admitted to 1st Alabama and then given 30-day furlough out of Hospital #9 on January 9, 1864.Listed as absent without leave on April 27, 1864. Might have possibly became a Cpl. of the 4th Alabama Cavalry by the end of the war as either he or his widow applied for pension in Oklahoma in the early 1900's.
There are no records of him afterwards. What happened to him? When where was he born? When and where did he die?Was he ever wounded more than recorded? Is there a photo out there of him?Would appreciate any help as I'm working on a book on the 26th Alabama.
