Tim, I can't tell you much about the life of John Cockey Owings.I can tell you much more about his family history. His namesake is Capt. John Cockey Owings (1736-1810) of Owings Hall, Maryland - gentleman plantation owner. My branch of the Owings family migrated out of Maryland into Kentucky and finally Missouri.Capt. Owings did many things and had many investments. In Bath County, Kentucky - he purchased an iron smelt which still stands. The county seat of Bath is Owingsville, named for his son Col. Thomas Deye Owings.Col. Owings was also a man of many facets, he was Col. of the U.S. 28th Infantry during the war of 1812 and was on Perry's ship for his Victory on the Great Lakes in the War of 1812.Col. Owings was a good friend of Henry Clay. The Owings mansion still stands in Owingsville.
