Just an update on the Irish Padden saga. I am a descendant, called Michael(Son born 1938) of Martin Joseph Padden born 1906 in Mayo. My fathers family consisted of Patrick(Pat), Alfred, James, Dorothy, Harry and Peter all born in Mayo. The names used in the next generation (mine) mirror many of the American descendants eg Catherine ,Rose, Eileen,Marie,James, Peter,Thomas etc.
I lived as a child in Roscommon Ireland and often visited my Padden cousins in Knock and Crossmolina. My maternal grandfather a teacher Martin Keane of Ballinlough, Roscommon manufactured potbelly stoves on the east coast of USA in he 1920's and made a reasonable sum and returned and bought several pubs and farms in Roscommon ( My father probably was orginally attracted to my mother by the former and spent his life avoiding physical toil in the latter. (Joking) The family was known for its attraction to vain causes My father fought in the Irish Free State army (aged 16)against the British (won) and subsequently against De Valera in the Irish civil war(lost) and two brothers fought in Spain against Franco(lost). Harry and Alfie lived for several years in America with relatives I believe in New York. At the outbreak of the Second World War four of the brothers joined the armed forces and fought at sea, on land and in the air in Europe(won due to assistance from the US of A). The brothers never got on well as a group but their children did. None of the family settled in Ireland after the war all moving and remaining unhappily in England ( Leeds, London and Devizes,)with their offspring. I now live in Sydney Australia, migrating here in 1964 but my first cousins have strong links with the USA, Niall worked for Red Adair as a helicopter pilot and another cousin was ensconced in the bosom (for a time) of the Rockefeller family!! Revenge?. I was the only Padden in the Sydney phone book in 1965. Now there is approx 30 but I have only one offspring a daughter Michaela (educated at Berkeley CA university).
