I'm tracing a Plymouth immigrant, the Irish Huguenot blacksmith Robert PADDOCK, b. ca 1584 in Stephenstown, County Dublin, a forebear of my husband's through his grandson Judah Paddock and Judah's wife, Alice Alden. I've been going crazy trying to sort out Robert's three wives -- all named Mary! -- with conflicting dates (or none at all) from the IGI and Ancestry.com. I hope kind readers can confirm or correct what I have so far.
Wife No. 1. Mary BALL - b. ca 1582 in County Louth, Ireland; married Robert Paddock on 3 Apr 1602/03 in Stephenstown, Co. Dublin, Ireland when he was about 18, she about 20; d. 14 Sep 1627, buried in Killany, Ardee, Co. Louth, Ireland. Apparently no issue from the marriage -- is that right?
Mary HOLMES (No. 2) - Does anybody know her birthdate? Birthplace? I have a marriage date, 12 Oct 1630, when Robert was about 48 (but no location except "Ireland"), and a death year, 1644. She died in Massachusetts, probably in Duxbury or Plymouth, but I'm not sure which place. And I can't nail down any sources for the foregoing, which is frustrating.
Robert and Mary are supposed to have come from Ireland to Plymouth in 1630, having sailed from Bristol, England. If they didn't marry until October, it would seem late for a transatlantic crossing afterwards because of weather, which makes me wonder if 1630 was really their emigration year. Does anyone know sources that could verify 1630 and Bristol? And have you run across the name of their ship?
This was the most complete list I could find of Robert's children; Alice, No. 1, seems to be out of order. If Wife No. 2 Mary HOLMES indeed died in 1644 and if the kids' birth dates are correct, the last two would be from Wife No. 3, Mary TRINE:
?? 1. Alice PADDOCK b: 7 MAR 1639/40 in East Bridgewater, Plymouth Co. Mass
2. Robert PADDOCK b: 1632 in Plymouth, New Plymouth, Mass
3. Elizabeth PADDOCK b: 27 JUN 1634 in Plymouth, New Plymouth, Mass
4. Zachariah PADDOCK b: 20 MAR 1635/36 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co. Mass
5. Mary PADDOCK b: 10 MAR 1636/37 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co. Mass
6. John PADDOCK b: 1 APR 1643 in Plymouth, New Plymouth, Mass
7. George PADDOCK b: 1647 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co. Mass (mother Mary Trine?)
8. Susanna PADDOCK b: 1649 in Plymouth, Plymouth Co. Mass (mother Mary Trine?)
But I'm a little puzzled by George, having read: "On his deathbed, Robert Paddock placed his youngest son John with Captain Willett [Ply. Col. Deeds, 1:198], his wife Mary [Trine] consenting, and this she confirmed after his death, 19 Nov. 1650. "
If John was the youngest, then George's birth order is wrong, some of the other kids' dates may be in question, and only Susanna would have been the child of Mary Trine.
As for Mary TRINE, she may have been from England, may have been born ca 1612, and may have come to Plymouth on the ship FORTUNE in 1621 as a young servant to the man she later married, widower William Palmer. Parents unknown, and her name may not even have been "Trine". She did marry Robert PADDOCK ca 1644 or 1646, but most of her other information is conjectural -- aaarrrgh!
Any help would be very much appreciated -- with sources if you have them. Merci!
