I had not noticed that both Samuel & John had sons named Joseph also. There is Windham Co records of a Joseph Paine to Anna Badcock marriage
The age of Benjamin Paine who died in 1755 has been shown two different ways. One is age 55, 8 months and the other is age 55, almost 8 Mar. The Lebanon, CT vital records has aged 55 years (almost 8 Mar) there is a slur after Mar that I can not make out.
My tendency is to believe what Sprague and Brewster genealogy have. Sprague has that John Paine died Feb. 1755 at Lebanon Conn, apparently one month after the Benjamin there, and at least there is some basis for what he had. No way of knowing what "The Payne Family Records" is based upon. It appears that H. D. Paine took a lot of it from the Thayer Memorial, published 1835.
Brewster genealogy is based upon Benjamin's age at death and family tradition. Family tradition is not always accurate. Walter Raleigh Paine is a grandson of Benjamin & Elizabeth. Wes Argo wrote in "The Argo Families Revisited" that his uncle was Robert Treat Paine. This appears very unlikely to me. When I asked if he had source material he sent me corrrespondance he had received from a cousin of my grandmother that stated this. In addition she provided Walter's parents as Phinehas Paine and Nancy Babcock which I was able to verify in probate records.
Church records at the time of Benjamin's marriage might provide his father's name, but I have not tryed this avenue.
