My great-great-great-grandmother, Elizabeth Pailin Ellis (1838?-1892), was the daughter of Frances Garrett Pailin, born about 1803, daughter of James Garrett and Susanna Torksey of Camden Co., NC and later of Pasquotank Co., NC. The problem is determining whether Elizabeth's father's name was Henry or Thomas and whether Henry Pailin and Ann Overman were her paternal grandparents. The 1927 death certificate of her sister, Martha ("Pattie") Pailin Pritchard, lists her parents as Henry Pailin and Frances Garrett. However, I find no Henry Pailins in Pasquotank County census records between 1810-1850. The only Pailin males I find are Joseph and Thomas. Perhaps the informant had her father's name mistaken and he was actually Thomas Pailin.
Frances Garrett's sister, Lydia Garrett (1802-1855), married Joseph Pailin, and I have never seen information on who his father was either. I have figured Lydia and Frances married Pailin brothers, and apparently their husbands were much older, born in the 1770's or 1780's. Through process of elimination I have concluded that Frances and Lydia most likely married sons of Henry Pailin and Ann Overman. Lydia and Joseph had many descendants around Elizabeth City, NC, one of whom had compiled family group sheets on the Pailin family, but he never seemed to determine Joseph's parents either.
