IVAN PANKOW / JOHN PONKOW
I am interested in any information regarding 'Ivan Pankow' and his wife 'Alvina Jakowina'. Ivan was born in Dobrowlany, Galicia approximately July 4th.,1888(died 1931 in Wisconsin). [someone suggested that this is Dobrovolje in the Ukraine] Kalusz was a nearby city located in Eastern Galicia, part of the Austrian Hungarian empire(which ceased to exist after the Great War, WW1). His nationality was Ruthenian. He was possibly Greek Orthodox at the time before his departure to America. In 1912 he worked in a Chemical Fertilizer Factory in Rendsburg, Germany.
He and his wife, Alvina sailed from Bremen, Germany, aboard the SS George Washington (opperated by North German Lines, the surviving company is ‘hapag-lloyd.com') and arrived NYC Ellis Island,April 14th.,1913. Records indicate that he was married in February, 1911 in Kalush Germany to Alvina Jakowina(born 14 Mar 1893, ) (her name or the city may not be correct). I have noticed that the spelling of places and names varies in different documents.
I have put together a small amount of information at the following url.Apparently his name was changed at Ellis Island to 'John Ponkow'.I am seeking information on any 'Pankows' in the Fulton,NY area where John Ponkow and his wife first went after Ellis Iland in 1913.Please visit>>>http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~johnponkowfamilyhttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~johnponkowfamily
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to conduct a search for information in the Ukrane. I would certainly appreciate any direct info re: 'Ivan Pankow' and/or his wife 'Alvina Jakowina', during their life in Europe, 1888 thru 1913.It has been suggested that Kalusz might be near ‘Lemberg or LWOW'.These terms may be in German, which I do not speak.
Sincerely,
R.H.Smith
