OBITUARY FOR LULA MAY NICHOLS
Lula May Nicholas, 90 passed away Monday, April 6, at the Cedar County Memorial Hospital after a short illness.She was born August 22, 1890 in Neosho, the daughter of Silas and Dorothy Sutton Pennebecker.Mrs Nichols and her first husband, George Preston lived in Filly until 1910. He then preceded her in death.After Mr Preston died she later married Frank Nichols March 11, 1941, and he preceded her in death in 1947.She also had a son, Georgie Preston, who preceded her in death.Mrs Nichols moved to El Dorado Springs from Carthage in 1960.She has been a member of the Christian Church in El Dorado Springs since 1960.Survivors include two step daughters, Carmeleta Baptist, Burbank, California; two nephews, Carl Woodford,El Dorado Springs, and Paul Woodford, Gladstone, Missouri;two nieces,Dorothy Tevis, Warsaw and Pearl Penland, Tulsa, Oklahoma;one sister-in-law,Lena Pannebecker,El Dorado Springs since 1960.Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 8, at 1 p.m. in the Milster-Isbell-Carothrs Chapel with Pastor James Edger Penland, nephew of Mrs. Nichols, officiating.Burial was in the Taylor Cemetery, Aavilla, Missouri, under the direction of Milster-Isbell-Carothers Funeral Home.

At 90, Lula M. Nichols,El Dorado Rest Haven, remembers almost half of the history of the United States."I saw Grover Cleveland when he was campaigning in Neosho. He pinned yellow ribbons all over me because I was a Republican.I wasn't in school yet."Mrs Nichols was born in Neosho."When I was 10 or 12 years old,the Indians would come up out of the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma).They'd whoop and holler and ride their beautiful horses.They were good riders, too"."The first church I remenmber going to was in Racine, Missouri, near where I was born.It was a log church house."Mrs Nichols moved early and often. "My daddy was a hand to move around.We moved from Guthrie, Oklahoma, to Fall City, Nebraska in a covered wagon.That was when McKinley was still living".MrsNichols and her husband, George Preston, lived in Filly about 1910 "until we starved out."After Mr Preston passed away, she later married Frank Nichols in 1941.They operated a filling station and tourist court on Highway 66near Carthage."It was abeautifulplace.We had two acres."She moved to El Dorado Springs from Carthage in 1960.She has been a member of the Christian Church in El Dorado since 1960."I worked there 14 years," she said.Mrs Nichols' nephew Carl Woodford, lives in El Dorado Springs.She has lived in theEl Dorado Rest Haven about six years, she said."I've lived for my Lord for 67 years,"she said,"since November 11, 1912.TheTitanic sank that year.

Penland.She is survived by her sons: James E. Penland and his wife Arizona of Gentry, Arkansas;Charles E. Penland and his wife Phyllis of San Antonio, Texas; and daughter Phyllis Marie Martin and her husband Lavaughn of Tulsa;9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.Service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 22, 1997 in the Rayola Baptist Community Chapel in Owasso with interment following at Floral Haven Cemetery, Stanley's Funeral Home.
