Between 1740-1745 David Pannill was born to William and Sarah Bayley Pannill of Virginia, probably Culpepper Co. He was the great grandson of the original Thomas Pannell who settled in Old Rappahanock Co.on lands granted around 1668.
As an adult, David lived in King William Co.with his wife, Sarah/Sallie.In the Revolutionary War he was a Captain or Artillery for the Virginia State line.
He died in 1795 while dictating his will which was not finished. His children were
1. Mary married Bartholomew D. Lacy, children John P and Bartholomew Lacy.
2. James Pannill, children Thomas A., Mary, David L., Edmund and Frances Pannill
3. Anne married 1. William P. Finch, 2. William Roberts, children were William P. Finch, Lucy and Sarah Roberts.
4. Elizabeth married James Smith, children were David, Rebecca, William, Sarah, Francis, Mary, Elizabeth and George Smith.
5. John Pannill is not named in the final estate settlement in 1833 by the grandchildren, but is named in deeds as the brother of James. He is said to have married Frances Richeson who married Benjamin Quarles after his death. His son was James who is said to have died without descendants.
In 1916 an application was submitted to DAR and in 1917 accepted for membership claiming the above Captain David Pannill as ancester.Claim stated that his wife was Drucilla Dove, that his children were Simeon, Hettie, Barbra, Zechriah, Thomas, William, Dove and Martin Pannill. The claimant was indeed descended from Zachariah Pannell but not from Captain David. In 1928 another of Zachariah's descendants became a member.
1809/10 in Fairfield Co. SC William Pannell, Jr. died intestate; Jan 17, 1810 his widow, Elizabeth, became his administrator to his estate assisted by Gan Thompson and Benjamin Pannel. She claimed 1/3 as her dower and the remainder was divided among her 8 children who were named in this order: Simeon, Barbary, Ester, Zachariah, Thomas, William Semor, Dove and Martin. In 1816 Elizabeth and Simeon sold their shares of the property of the late William Pannell, Jr. to Wiley Coleman. She referred to William Jr. as her late husband and stated that the property was her dower.Simeon called William Jr. his father. In 1820, Zachariah sold his part to Wiley Coleman and named all 8 children: Simeon, Barbara, Ester, Zacariah, Thomas, William, Dovie and Martin. (Dovie is written in such a way that it could be mistaken for Davie or David, but is clearly Dove.)
This should clear up the confusion, but I am afraid that it has taken on a new life.Lately I have seen lineages that include David Pannell and Drucilla Dove, not in Colonial Virginia but in South Carolina. He is supposedly the son of William Pannell, Sr of Fairfield Co. SC and has once more become the father of Simeon and Zachariah, but not the other 6 children of William Pannell, Jr.And in a couple of places I have found included my own grgrgrgrandfather Richard, son of Anderson Pannell.
This may be the David Pannell found in Winston Co., AL aged 97, born in SC, but where does Drucilla Dove come from?Did she exist?Does anyone have a record, evidence or even family tradition of her other than the DAR record? Could her name have sprung from a confusion over the named of William Pannell, Sr.'s wife who is said to be Lucinda Dove? Or even the wife of William Pannell in Caroline Co., VA whose name was Pricilla.
Sorry this is so long, but I know we are all searching for truth and details seem necessary.
