Children of Joseph Parent and Angele LaSalle:Joseph, Louis
Children of Joseph Parent and Genevieve Pelletier:Felix, Marie, Eleanore, Elizabeth, Celina, Elvina Clementine, Henry
Hello Victoria and Guy,
Thank you both for your posts at various sites - you have helped in my research.I have also been assisted by Janell Norman in Wisconsin, Charles Parent in Quebec, and Melvin Beaudry - you may have seen some of their contributions on the internet. Also, Ann Eastman, a Malaterre descendent, and my mother-in-law, a direct descendant of Joseph Parent and Genevieve Pelletier.
The challenge in my research was making the connection back to Quebec because family stories do not match the actual records - the family stories had morphed into false clues.A user-submitted tree at familysearch.org [search Jelief Pelky], with correct and incorrect information, lists the parents as Joseph Parent and Jelief Pelky of Sorel. This clue was submitted to researcher Charles Parent in Quebec and he made the breakthrough! He wrote:
"The closest I have to the name and area is Genevieve Pelletier who married a Joseph Parent. She was the daughter of Urbain Pelletier and Marie Proulx. This Joseph was born 1 Aug 1820 in Yamaska (city or region?) (close enough to Sorel area). His parents were Joseph Parent (1795-1826) and Marie Couturier. And, yes, that line goes back to Pierre Parent and Jeanne Badeau.Joseph (1820) married 1) Angele Lasalle, 12 Oct. 1841 in St-Michel Yamaska. They had a son also named Joseph who was born 1842 and another son, Louis born 1844. Nothing else on them.Joseph then married 2) Genevieve Pelletier on 23 Feb. 1846 in St-Aime, Cte Richelieu. They had 2 children: Felix in Nov. 1846 and Marie in 1849. Nothing else on them either."
I have since found some records for Genevieve's family as Pelletier dit Pelky.
I have a copy of the marriage record of Joseph Parent and Genevieve Pelletier, 23 Feb 1846, at Ste Aime Cte Richelieu.Translation by Janell Norman:
"It says that two bans were dispensed. They only published and announced one during a mass.Joseph is a widower and a farmer. His dead wife was Angele LaSalle.Genevieve is a minor. She is the daughter of Urbaine Pelletier and Marie Proulx, who is dead. They come from the parish. There is no impediment or opposition to the marriage. The living parents consented.A responsible priest received all the consents and gave benediction with Modeste Rieche, Louis Parent, brother of spouse, Urbaine Pelletier, Joseph Lasalle, brother-in-law of the spouse. They cannot sign their names."
Joseph, Genevieve and children emigrated to the U.S. in the mid-1850's.I can't find them in the 1857 MN Territorial Census but the Archdiocese of St. Cloud Minnesota has an 1856 baptism record for daughter Elizabeth. They were in St. Cloud MN when the 1860 and 1870 censuses were taken:

Henry is listed as 3 years old in the 1870 census.
The elder son of Joseph Parent and Angele LaSalle, Joseph Parent, was also in St. Cloud living apart from his father. In 1860, he was single. In 1870, he was living with his wife, Marie Marchand and baby Barbara Ellen.Marie Marchand's parents lived in or near St. Norbert, Manitoba and in the early 1870's both families, those of Joseph Sr. and Joseph Jr, seem to have moved up to the Red River Valley between Pembina and Winnipeg.Sons Felix and Louis stayed in the St. Cloud area.Felix married Lavina Latterell and farmed in Gilmanton Twp, Benton County, MN.He retired to Davis, Lane County, Oregon where he died 18 Oct 1922.
Death certificates for the children Joseph, Felix, Henry and Eleanore contain no parent information. The son, John (marr Marie Malaterre), may have died in 1913 at Willow Bunch - if it is the same John, the record does not have parent information. The Archdiocese of St. Cloud does have baptism records for Elizabeth and Elvina Clementine and a death record for the daughter, Mary, who died in 1869.There is also a baptism record for 'PARRENT, William, son of Joseph and Geneviev Pitier,' bapt 1867, day and month not recorded, by a missionary priest, Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Millerville, Douglas County MN.I believe this is a record for Henry and possibly, additional research in Montana, will turn up records showing Henry's middle name or initial.Daughter Celina married John B Fletcher at Assumption Catholic Church, Pembina, ND in Nov 1874 and her parents were listed as "Joseph Parent and Genevie Parent."So far, the census data and these few records are all I have to prove the relationships between the parents and the children born in the U.S.
In 1880, Henry, age 12, was listed as a servant on the farm of his sister, Eleanore Parent and her husband, Adolph Carl, at Carlisle Twp, Pembina County, ND.A grandson of Henry's told me this story: 'After his mother died, Henry went west with a Ute woman who had worked for his mother. There, he signed onto a cattle drive that took him to Texas and from Texas, signed on to another cattle drive that brought him to Great Falls [MT]where he became friends with Paris Gibson, the founder of Great Falls."Henry seems to have left ND before the 1885 census was taken.
The family members who migrated to Montana used the spelling "Parrent" instead of the traditional "Parent."
I am looking for death information for the parents, Joseph and Genevieve, plus any additional information on these children:Louis (after 1900 census, possibly went to Montana), Elizabeth (married James White at Pembina, 7 Apr 1875), Celina (marr John B Fletcher), Elvina (after 1870 census), and John (after 1900 census).
