Death of Mr.James Pascoe
This morning at seven o'clock,another old resident of Bendigo-Mr James Pascoe-breathed his last,at his residence,
the Belfast Arms Hotel,Hargreaves Street,after an illness of
only six hours.
Mr.Pascoe,who was 65 years of age,was taken ill about
one o'clock this morning.At one time he was heard to call
out,and his son in law,Mr.E.Hancock,immediately went to his
assistance.As he entered the room,Mr.Pascoe was observed to
fall out of bed on to the floor,Dr.Hinchcliff was sent for,
and remedial measures applied in the meantime.The medical
gentleman referred to,arrived very soon and pronounced
Mr.Pasce,who was unconciuous,to be afflicted with an apopletic fit.The condition of the patient remained the same
until seven o'clock,when he expired.
The deceased was born at Cambourne near Penzance,Cornwall,
England,in 1821 and at the age of seventeen left his native
town and proceeded to Wales,where he worked in the lead mines.In 1849 when the gold fever of California was at its
height,he left the shores of England and soon landed in
San Francisco.He remained thre about three or four years
when he returned to England.He then set sail for Australia and arrived in 1856.In the same year he was upon Bendigo,and
in common, with the bulk of people,followed mining,as an
occupation ,at one time occupying the position of manager
of the Unity Mine,Ironbark.Eighteen years ago he entered
business at New Chum as licensee of the Ellsmere Hotel.
Shortly afterwards he removed to the New Chum Reef Hotel,
and eight years ago became licensee of the Limerick Castle
Hotel,Williamson Street,City.After spending three years
ther,he became the licensee of the Belfast Arms Hotel,
Hargreaves Street,where he died today.
The deceased was very well known throughout the district,
and leaves a family of three grown-up children.It might be
mentioned that last night Mr.Pascoe was in his usual health,
which during the last twelve months,has been of an indifferent character.The funeral takes place tomorrow
James Pascoe was Buried at Sandhurst Cemetery,Vitoria,Aust.
