In the case of my family, the name was Kindgren - my grandfather was from Sweden.A Swedish genealogist told me that in Sweden, 100 years ago, Kindgren was considered to be a middle class name...belonging to tradesmen, supervisors, etc....just a step above the normal patronymic surname....There is a book "Cradled In Sweden" by Carl-Erik Johansson, and on page 119-120 of this book is says that the Genealogical Society library in Salt Lake City has a printed history of the Kindgren family - perhaps you could find what you are looking for there.
