Thank you so much for posting the information about your grandfather, Richard Pattee, on the message board. I am sorry that I am only now replying to your message, but I was in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil this past week at a conference on the history of anthropology where I was presenting a paper that included information on your grandfather. In short, in his time working for the US State Department in the 1930s and 1940s, he participated in a number of activities and was an important facilitator in international intellectual exchanges especially between anthropologists and historians in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean, especially those working on the study of the African diaspora. Folks like Melville Herskovits, of Northwestern University, Fernando Ortiz in Cuba, Arthur Ramos in Brazil, and Jean Price-Mars in Haiti.
I will be glad to share any information I have, including copies of his publications, if you like.
You mentioned that he spent his final years in French Canada. I thought that might be the case, because in tracing some of his papers at the Catholic University of America, something indicated that he might have gone to Laval University. Is that what happened? Do you know in what year he died? Do you know if there was an obituary on him?
Thank you once again. I hope to hear from you again. Please feel free to contact me directly at the address or e-mail given below.
