I have a Thomas PATTEN, born about 1803 in Stockport, Cheshire. (Thomas' father may be Robert PATTEN). Thomas was a silk-weaver before joining the 3rd Regiment of Foot at Manchester in the County of Lancashire in August 1826,aged 23 years.
Thomas served over 16 years with the "Buffs" in India, returning to England in 1842. While visiting family/relatives in Stockport, he met young Irish weaver Mary Myers, and the couple married at Cashel, Tipperary in 1846. The Regiment was posted to Ireland in September 1846, and Thomas gained his discharge in Dublin in 1847.
Thomas PATTEN joined many other military pensioners who were accepted for Fencible service in New Zealand, and sailed aboard the "Berhampore" in 1848 accompanied by his pregnant wife. As well as the son, David, born en route, the couple had ten or so children born in Onehunga, Auckland, New Zealand. Thomas died there Sept 1875.
I have quite a bit more info on Thomas PATTEN and some of his offspring.
I AM VERY KEEN TO LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT THOMAS' PARENTS & SIBLINGS, WHO WERE PROBABLY FROM CHESHIRE.
