I saw an old record in the Paul family and am convinced that one of my Lincoln Co. WV Pauley branches was descended from Hugh Paul. John William Paul c. 1806-c. 1830s m. Rachel --said to be Chambers or Blankenship his sons were 1. Buren --spelled Beuren, etc. 2. Ellison m. Julianne Dolan
I'm descended from Ellison's son Julian m. Aurelia Griffith Julian's son Homer Pauley m. Maymie Belle Harless
My basis on that my grandfather steadfastly claimed that this branch was in no way related to the other Lincoln Co. branch --whom he called the "French Pauleys." He believed his Pauleys were of German origin BUT the Pauls were Scots. He claimed his grandfather went by "Paul." I see here that my gg-father Ellison seems to have been named for Mercy Ellison or John Ellison. I'd appreciate any feedback. My grandfather was also descended from the other Pauleys as well. It seems that the Pauls and the Polleys got merged into Pauley.

I think the Isaac Paul you mention married Mercy Ellison 30 Apr 1787. If this is the one, I believe Isaac Paul's father was Daniel Paul and his mother was Harriet. In Greenbrier Co., WV court orders, 30 Aug 1798 there is a suit between John Sciers who married Sarah Paul, John Paul, Isaac Paul, Gregory Paul, Daniel Paul, Jesse Paul, Mary Paul, John Ellison who married Frances Paul and Elizabeth Paul vs. Hugh Paul in chancery. Tax records for Prince William Co., VA 1782-3, Greenbrier Co. WA 1784-98, Monroe Co., WV 1799-, Kanawah Co, WV 1805- and Putnam Co all support that the plantiffs and the defendant were siblings, Hugh Paul being the oldest. George Paul, brother to Isaac Paul died 21 Aug 1853 in Putnam Co., WV and the death record lists his parents as Daniel Paul and Harriet. From a 28 Aug 1788 Greenbrier court order states that Daniel Paul was a tennant of Wallace Estill. Daniel died between 1789, where he appears as Daniel Paul, Sr. and 1792 in Greenbrier Co., WV - tax records. The 1747 tithable list for Prince William Co, VA lists Daniel Paul as a servant/tennant of Isaac Foster, Isaac Foster's brother had a servant/tennant by the name of Hugh Paul. Hugh Paul appears in George Washington's Va regiment, his size roll lists him as being born in Scotland, which I believe Daniel Paul probably was too.
