John Payne/ /Ben Payne / William B Payne Kershaw, NC/ Lowndes AL/ Wood/ TX
I am seeking information/confirmation/definitive proofs, ect. about this Payne line.I am willing to work with anyone else that shares common interest, as well as share additional information I already have gathered.
Please note that critical documentation is yet lacking. Please don't take the suspect connections to ancestry and put it forth as "fact" in a family file, in that if it is not correct it then becomes widely published misinformation that has to be weeded through in pursuit of an accurate family history, and none of us want that.
John Payne in Kershaw County, SC 1790-1820, (not the John Payne the blacksmith that married Elizabeth, but perhaps his nephew, such as it would appear), and Benjamin Payne who resided there with him ca 1810 to ca 1830when he, Ben, removed to Lowndes County, Alabama, where he probably died ca. 1850-1860. I don't know if John Payne died, or he moved, but he was gone, or living in someone else's household in 1830.Does anyone know the name of the father of this John Payne, a brother of John Payne the Blacksmith? I have seen reference to this younger John Payne, probable father of Ben, as indicating his wife as to having been named Sarah Shiver.
My ancestor, William Payne, is listed in the 1840 census for Lowndes, near Ben,and I believe he was Bejamin's second son, born in Kershaw ca 1807. Also, William's wife was Elizabeth Bradley, born in 1811, also SC., who I believe was the daughter of the John Bradley living near the Paynes in Lowndes in 1840, as well as having lived near them in Kershaw. SC.,for many years previous to that. It appears these families all moved together.
William was a country Doctor/farmer, throughout his life. I believe he was educated at Anderson, South Carolina, ca 1830.There is is listing for a young couple there in 1830, just her and him, and the ages fit for William and Elizabeth. I have not found a marriage record for him and Elizabeth.
William is found in 1840 in Lowndes, Alabama, with him, wife, and four children, which fit the ages for his children then born, as identified in later census/death records. All of his children were born in Alabama, starting in 1833. Between 1840-1850 he moved to Randolph County, Alabama, where he was listed in the 1850 US Census. He moved a couple years later to Wood County, Texas, where he farmed, practiced medicine, and died in Nov. 1880. He had two nice farms, both over 200 acres, and extensive personal property.Elizabeth had died 1860-1870, and William had married a woman named Nancy, b. ca. 1822, Ga., who survived him.He stipulated in his will made Sep. 1879 that one farm would belong to Nancy, and the heirs of her body, and the other farm and personal property would be divided among his living children from his wife Elizabeth, who he named.I believe the reference to Nancy's heirs was in regard to children of her first marriage, as no children belonging to her and William Payne have been found.
Elizabeth's maiden name is recorded as having been Bradley on the death of her and William's son David T Payne.
There was a Stephen Payne b. ca 1814 SC., that lived in Smith and Henderson Counties in Texas, neighbors to Wood County, that was in Pike County, Alabama in 1840 that I believe was possibly either Elizabeth's brother, a son of John Bradley, or her cousin, a son of the Samuel Bradley in Montgomery, AL.
William's brother, John Payne, born ca. 1819 SC, was living in 1880 in Quitman, Wood County, Texas, with Eliza Rozell, William and Elizabeth's daughter, identified as his niece, in the US census. This john Payne's wife was still living in Alabama at the time, and he is also missing from the household she was living in 1870.
I am able to identify some of John Bradley's children, but some are so close to both him and Samuel I have as to yet been able to ascertain exactly who belonged to whom, thus am not yet comfortable in going too far past mere suggestions.
I believe it is possible to ascertain to a great degree of probability as to some of the children of Benjamin Payne, but again, do not have the definitive proofs yet needed.
