Amos Pearse was born in 1729 in Winsford, Somerset, England. He married Joan and they had six children:-

Amos remarried in September 1766 to Melissa Hobbs in Winsford Somerset, England, and they had one child:-
GRACE born in 1768 in Winsford Somerset, died in 1769
Amos frequently stood in the fore prescribed overseers of the poor at
Winsford, producing and presenting the annual accounts. This was because he was unusually literate and numerate (it is possible that he operated a tailoring business, like his descendants).
Records show that on 12 Aril 1757 “The account of Amos Pearse for Mr
Thomas Lyddon, one of he overseers of ye poor” (his signature is the same as that made at his marriage to Melissa Hobbs in 1766).Records further show the following:-
1759 – Amos Pearse for John Pearse for Week
1760 – Amos Pearse for Mrs Lyddon
1761 – Amos Pearse for Amos Hole for Bridge End
1762 – Amos Pearse for John Gregory for Linkham

1772 – Amos Pearse for Mr Robert Hole
1774 – Amos Pearse was overseer in his own right at last (end of Account Book)
The fact that Amos was not chosen as overseer in his own right until 1774 might indicate that his father had died shortly before this date (such parish duties falling to the head of the household). The only adult burial that is legible around this time is that of a William Pearse in 1773 (he of West Nethercott?).
Melissa died in 1766 in Winsford Somerset.Amos survived her and passed away 1797 in Winsford Somerset, England.
John Pearse was born in 1760 in Winsford Somerset, England. To Amos and Joan Pearse, and married Sarah Reed, born in 1765 on June 20th 1785 in Carhampton, Somerset.
John was known as “Mr Pearse the Village Tailor” who in the early 1790s allowed a roomin his house near the church (where the vicarage now stands) in Carhampton to be used by the first Methodists in the village, at the instigation of his friend Richard Jones, who had been converted at John Wesley’s chapel in Bristol.Under pressure from the established church, John was forced to withdraw his permission after a short time; but Jones then build a small chapel I his own house (now the village shop and post office). There is some irony in the fact that the newfoundations for the new vicarage were being dug, traces of an ancient building were found, which was through to be possibly Carantoc’s Oratory, the first Christian chapel built the by the C6th Celtic Saint after whom Carhampton is said to have been named.
John and Sarah were married on the same day as his sister Frances in possibly a double wedding.Robert Leigh (plus the parish clerk) was witness to both.

Elizabeth Pearse was by calling, a lady’s maid. Her first born child Mary died whilst on the four month journey to Australia, and another nine children were born to her and Amos in Australia.
After their arrival in Australia Amos and Elizabeth settled in the Bexley district. After residing in the area for quite some time, they purchased over an acre of land adjacent to George Preddey’s other Bexley property, and on it they erected a General Store.Mrs Pearse’s store was to remain Bexley’s only store for nearly twenty years. The original building was a tiny white washed structure of wooden slabs built almost flat on the ground with a wooden shingle roof. Later it was provided with a brick front and the roof changed to corrugated iron.
The rear of the property was leased to a Scottish blacksmith by the name of Henry Hoggan, whose son became General Manager of the Australian Gas Light Company.
Amos Pearse, although a tailor by trade, became a competent market gardener keeping the small community supplied with poultry and vegetables.
With the break up of the old Bexley Land Grant in the 1850s and the establishment of a settlement at Gannon’s Forest, Bexley was regarded in official circles as being part of that area, and it was not until November 1882 after considerable local agitation, that an unofficial post office was established in Elizabeth Pearse’s Bexley store with Elizabeth as Postmistress.
The huge increase in the population in the late 1880s resulted in requests to expand its services from that of selling stamps and providing a mail bag for the receipt of letters, but all to no avail.
In August 1899 Elizabeth’s daughter Jessie (married John P. Clune, a member of the well known hotel family from Arncliffe) wrote to the Postmaster General’s Department to inform them that her mother’s health was failing and offering to take over her duties.
Jessie Clune was appointed Postmistress the following month.
