1.WILLIAM M.2 PEAY(JOSEPH1)1 was born Abt. 1812 in Tennessee, and died Nov 1881 in Erath Co. TX.He married JEMIMA KEELE 20 Dec 1830 in Rutherford Co. TN, daughter of WILLIAM KEELE and JEMIMA MORELAND.She was born Abt. 1810 in Tennessee, and died Abt. 1872.
Notes for WILLIAM M. PEAY:
William and Jemima were listed in the 1850 census of Bedford County, Tennessee, living
nearby George D. Stephenson. The spelling of this family name in earlier census was
"Pea". William's brother Joseph "Pea" was shown to be living with William and Jemima
during the 1850 Tennessee census, shown as a laborer, age 35. William and Jemima
apparently moved to Butler County, Ohio after that, as they sold land in Butler County on 8
Mar 1858, apparently before moving again, when they purchased property on Slaty Creek in
Ohio County, Kentucky in 1858, 1863 and 1870. William's middle initial was shown as "M."
in these records. This land was near property later purchased by William Thomas
Stephenson. William and Jemima Peay were listed in the 1860 and 1870 census in Ohio
County, Kentucky. At the time of the 1870 census, William's daughters, Rhoda Lee and
Susan Melissa, had married brothers, John and William Thomas Stephenson respectively,
and were living near William and Jemima Peay on Bull Run Creek in Ohio County. William
and Jemima sold their land in Ohio County on 3 Sep 1875, and eventually ended up in
Stephens County, Texas, as William M. Peay was listed in the 1880 Stephens County
census living nearby daughters Rhoda Lee, Susan Melissa, Elenor J., Sarah, and their
families. Jemima apparently died in Kentucky, and William in Texas. William owned
property in Erath County, Texas at one time, according to Texas Property Records.
Jemima's sister, Mary F. Keele, married Robert Belmain and lived nearby William and
Jemima during the 1860 Ohio County, Kentucky census. This has misled some to believe
that Jemima's maiden name was Belmain. Jemima was the daughter of Reverend William
Keele, who was an ordained minister of the Primitive Baptist Church, and who lived for a
time in Bedford County, Tennessee, near William and Jemima.
On 28 Dec 1875, William Peay bought 213 acres of land in Erath Co. TX from a F. L.
Nugent and wife. This land was part of the original Nancy J. Walker survey (file no. 2-207)
originally consisting of 1280 acres located about 3 miles due north of Stephensville, Texas.
The 213 acres was taken from the south end of the original survey. On 7 Dec 1881, the
Peay brothers in Kentucky. R. D., J. M., & W. A., relinquished, "for Love and Affection",
any rights in the 213 acres to their sisters. On 31 May 1884, three of the Peay sisters and
their husbands sold 51 acres of the 213 acres to their sister, Rhoda L. Stephenson. On 1
Dec 1884, John and Rhoda L. Stephenson sold the 51 acres to a Henry Counts for the sum
of $300.00. John and Rhoda were shown at this time as being residents of Eastland Co. TX,
