We are descendants of a Susan Johnson Peed (m. John Williamson 1832 in Norf. Co.). Susan was the d/o Lemuel Peed (ca. 1761-1835) and Susan (Prob. Johnson)(ca. 1771-1825) [Petersburg death record]. Susan (b. 1800/06) was born in Princess Anne Co.Many (or perhaps Most of the Peeds of PA Co moved into Norfolk by ca 1830 as a result of asevere agricultural depression of the 1820's.
The 1790 census lists a Joel Pead, Thomas Pead and Lemuel Pead together in Norfolk Co. on the North side of Tanner's creek and a Nathaniel Pead on the Portsmouth south side. These Peed/Peads are likely related to another Joel Peed (WP 1784) of Princess Anne Co. who wrote his will in Dec 1783. Joel mentions his sons, Lemuel and Samuel Peed. The Lemuel in Norfolk Co in 1790 maybe a different Lemuel. In 1810 and 1820, a Lemuel Peade (prob. father of Susan) is enumerated in Princess Anne. By 1830, no Pead's were enumerated in Princess Anne as the severe agricultural depression of the 1820's drove many away. The establishment of the first ferry in 1822 across the Elizabeth river bridging Norfolk and Portsmouth accelerated the withdrawal. Following the death of his wife, Susan (ca.1771-1825) in 1825 in PA Co. Obit., Lemuel Peed (ca.1761-1835), likely s/o Joel moved across the river to what would become Portsmouth obituary; Tuesday 3 Nov 1835.
By the time of John and Susan's marriage (1832) most of Portsmouth was still part of Norfolk County and Peed was a familiar name with James, John, Robert and William Peed being enumerated in the Portsmouth area of Norfolk. A Joel Peed (ca. 1800-1833) Tuesday 16 July 1833 (p.3; c.3) LVA film #188; Henley Papers "Died on Saturday (July 13) at the residence of John Shipp at Seawell's point, at age about 33 years, leaving a wife". This Joel is the proper age to be a brother or cousin of our Susan. The interaction of the Peeds and Shipps here is intriquing as Susan's son, Charles Lemuel Williamson married a Shipp.
Susan's known brother, William Peed (b. ~ 1806) married Eliza Temple (b. about 1817) and was living in Petersburg (Note a William Peed is not listed in Petersburg/ Dinwiddie Co in 1840). William supplied information for Susan's death record. Wiliam and Eliza had three children, Rowena Susan Peed (1851-1859), William Temple Peed (about 1852-1891) and Tomas Lemuel Peed (1854-1856). All are buried in Old Blandford Church Cemetery in Petersburg on Crater Rd.
