Feb 14, 2012: In regard to the Mary wife of Albert Hubbard Hope born in NC in 1825 being the daughter of William Peeples and his wife Rebecca Johnson is most doubtful. The notion that someone would have given birth at the age of 51 in the early 19th century is as close to zero as possible.Furthermore it is quite strange that they would have had a child born 14 years after the birth of their previous daughter (Sarah in 1811).Finally the 1820-1840 censuses provide evidence that is contrary to William and Rebecca having a daughter born around 1825.The 1820 census shows two daughters born between 1810 and 1820, the 1830 census shows two daughters born between 1810 and 1815, and the 1840 census shows one daughter born between 1810 and 1820.Based upon these records one would believe that they had two daughters born between 1810 and 1815. We know one of them was Sarah and could speculate the other was Mary.If that is the case it seems doubtful that this Mary was the wife of Albert Hope because Albert’s wife was very consistent in the census records of 1850, 1860, and 1880 of stating her age.All three censuses indicate she was born between 1825 and 1827.Furthermore she is listed as having no children born prior to 1847, but did have children born into the late 1860’s.If she was born around 1810-1815 she would have been quite old to have had children then. The source for Mary Hubbard, wife of Albert Hope being the daughter of William and Rebecca Peeples is the 1953 book by, "Our Peeples Family, A genealogy of the descendants of William Peeples and wife Rebecca Johnson.”It states no source or any other records of Mary; therefore the author’s true source of this is unknown.
The only record that even remotely shows any commonality between Mary Hope, wife of Albert Hope and a daughter of William and Rebecca Johnson Peeples is the 1880 census record for Mary Hope, which states that she and her mother were born in NC and her father was born in Virginia. Naturally that alone is not enough to garner evidence that Mary Hope is the daughter of William Peeples as there were 2,045 Mary’s listed in the 1880 census who were born in NC and whose father was born in Virginia and mother in North Carolina. With all of this being the case I would ascertain that Mary Peeples wife of Albert Hope is not a daughter of William and Rebecca Johnson Peeples.I would further ascertain that we in fact don’t even know if the daughter listed in the 1820-1840 census records of William Peeples even was named Mary.
