I'm trying to verify, or else disprove, something I found on a website with no source listed.
For years I have been stuck at my ancestor Hannah Cliff, b. ca. 1720, who married Daniel Pegg of Philadelphia PA.I have always seen her parents listed as Joseph Cliff and Anna or Hannah ___, but again, the documentation on that is pretty thin.Just today, I bumped into a website which claims that Hannah was not a Cliff but a Calef and is identical to the Hannah Calef b. in 1726 in Ipswich MA to Joseph and Hannah (Jordan) Calef.
So far, I have not been able to find any documentation which would indicate the truth or falsity of this assertion.I did find one other site, unsourced again, which claims (with no dates or places listed) that this Hannah Calef married a Godfrey Smith; but her marriage to Daniel Pegg _could_ be a remarriage.Or, of course, Hannah (Cliff) Pegg and Hannah Calef could be two entirely different people.
One thing which points to her having been from somewhere other than Philadelphia is that the early Phila. records are actually quite good, and despite years of looking, there seems to be no Cliff family in the late 17th/early 18th century in Philadelphia, or at least none which left any records I've found.I've suspected for some time that she was from somewhere else in the colonies. Her husband, Daniel Pegg, was a wealthy and fairly prominent guy, so it's entirely possible that he traveled & may have met & married his wife in another place.
Anyway, the first thing is to find out if the Calef family is even a possibility.Does anyone know anything definitive about Hannah Calef, daughter of Joseph and Hannah (Jordan) Calef, which might help to either bolster or else rule out this possibility?
