William E. Pelfrey, 68, of Chillicothe, died at home March 12, 2004. Survived by wife, Joan, and children Cynthia Murray, Chillicothe; William Pelfrey, Westerville; Jeffrey Hedderson, Chillicothe; Marcia (Howard) Carroll-Duarte, Chillicothe; James Pelfrey, Frankfort; and Joan Sambol, Hilliard. Also survived by six grandchildren, Kelly Royster, Rachel Carroll, Dominic Duarte, Kaitlin Duarte, Katie Sambol, and Samantha Sambol; as well as two great-grandchildren; brothers Kenneth (Patti) Pelfrey, Worthington, and James (Gloria) Pelfrey, Orange, TX; sister Betty (Earl) Clayborn, Ocean Shores, WA; half-sister Patricia Lowe, Chillicothe. He was predeceased in death by his father, Willie, mother, Mildred, and step-father, Clarence Strausbaugh.
William was born November 2, 1935, to Willie Pelfrey and Mildred F. Evans Pelfrey Strausbaugh. He attended Unioto and Chillicothe high schools prior to serving in the Navy. After working for the Chillicothe Fire Department, he went to work for the Federal Reformatory; later the Chillicothe Correctional Institute, retiring in 1985. He also served as a van driver for his special friends in the Mennonite community. In his spare time, he enjoyed training quarter horses, as well as mules, winning many blue ribbons and trophies.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, in Ware Funeral Home, Chillicothe, with his brother-in-law, Dr. Newell Wert, officiating. Military rites with interment following at Green Summit Cemetery, Adelphi. Friends may call at Ware's from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.
