Gene Dean, Louisville, KY ============================ Dear Gene,
James Pendergraft was my great-great grandfather. He married Sarah "Lou" Gene PENDERGRAFT and they lived in Charity, MO in Dallas County. She went by "Lou."
Dora Elsie (Aunt Dora) was my great-aunt. I met her when I was young and also her husband Uncle Melvin (Melvin Matthew ALFORD). I am in contact with one of their sons' children and knew him. He was Carl ALFORD and his wife is still alive and I know her. Their children are also still alive and some are doing genealogy. I also have met their children. Dora moved to California, where I live and many PENDERGRAFTS of her line live.
We go to the PENDERGRAFT reunions here. Some of the cousins are doing genealogy. Allen PENDERGRAFT wrote several booklet you can see at amazon.com but are out of print. Some of the Pendergrafts wrote an updated booklet. The line goes back to the South and before that to CT and then Ireland. Some say that before Ireland it goes back to Belgium and the name PENDERGEEST. My grandmother first used PENDERGRASS but later used PENDERGRAFT. Others before her varied the spelling too as they did in Ireland as well.
At one time the name was De PENDERGRAS, I believe. They were not Celtic as far as I know.
I know many of my cousins fairly well. My parents knew many of their parents and their parents. Please write me.
