Lona, thanks for the update. It answers a lot of questions, but creates some others. According to your info, the child, Emma J. was born in 1864. I'm wondering about the father. The Civil War info on Austin's unit keeps him busy in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania and not listed as deserting until October 14, 1864. Maybe he went home on leave but that is really doubtful. Very few leaves were granted during that time, except underextreme hardship or medical necessity. Our family lore is that Austin heard that his 2 brothers were killed and he left at that point. I'm sure the horrors that he encountered were enough to weaken most of the strongest soldiers in today's army. Thanks again for the information.
