J. Fred Penley, 80, of Kingsport, Sullivan Co TN, formerly of Glenrock, PA, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 10, 2008, at Holston Manor Nursing Home, Kingsport, TN.
Born in Kingsport, TN, J. Fred moved to Pennsylvania at age 17 and recently moved back home to Kingsport. He was of the Holiness faith. He served in the US Army and the Merchant Marine during both WW II and Korea. J. Fred was retired from McClarin's Plastics. He loved to sing, tell jokes and go fishing and never met a stranger.
J. Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents, John and Jennie Forbes Penley; his son, Michael Penley; three sisters, Margaret Edwards, Bonnie McFall and Edna Peterson; and a brother, Roy Penley.
Survivors include his children, Randal L. Penley and wife Linda of Kingsport, TN, Richard Penley and wife Marie of PA, Shirley Gebhart and husband Patrick of WVA, and Donna Blyskal and husband John of DEL; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 5 step- great grandchildren; his sister, Lovely P. Templeton of Kingsport, TN; two brothers, Jim Penley and Vernon Penley both of York, PA; a special niece, Edwina Byington; and several more aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at Holston Manor, 3641 Memorial Blvd., Kingsport with Rev. Mike Pelham, officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Presentation of the flag will be by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265.
