Rev. Ray Penley, 63, of Cassi Road, Chuckey, TN, the South
Central Community, went home to be with the Lord Monday
evening, July 11, 2011, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born May 19, 1948.
He was employed by Magnavox/Phillips Consumer Electronics
for 28 years and was Pastor of Open Door Tabernacle for
one year and Pastor of Horse Creek Mission Church for 17
years. He sang with The Penley Family for many years.
Rev. Penley loved and served the Lord faithfully. He was a
loving and devoted husband, father, and papaw, who always
put others before himself.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. James and
Bertha Penley; one sister and brother-in-law, Frances and
Hugh Saults; sister-in-law, Kay Penley; his grandmother,
Macie Watts; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Nellie and
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Vickie Sharon
Valentine Penley; one daughter and son-in-law, Robin
Michelle and John Morgan, of Chuckey, TN; one grandson,
Ethan Ray Morgan; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Carl
Penley, and Rev. Amos and Susie Penley, all of Chuckey,
TN; a cousin, whom he considered a brother, Lee Dunbar of
Chuckey; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Linda and
Charles Mathes of Chuckey, TN, and Edward and Debbie
Valentine, of Kingsport, TN; aunt, Hallie Hampton, of
Chuckey, TN; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-
nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m., and
6 p.m. – 8 p.m., on Thursday, at Doughty-Stevens Funeral
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m., Thursday, July 14,
2011, in the Doughty-Stevens Chapel. The Rev. Amos Penley,
the Rev. John Buchanan, and the Rev. Stephen Saults will
Interment will be 11 a.m., Friday, July 15, 2011, at
Liberty Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dallas Penley,
Charles Baines, Stephen Saults, Melvin Saults, Timmy
Penley, Joe Morgan, Wade Lee Mathes, Kyle Penley, and Ben
Ware. Honorary pallbearers will be Lee Dunbar, Frank
Morgan, Danny Payne, Luke Buchanan, Lamon Rice, Howard
Painter, Vestal Watts, and the Rev. Kenneth Bowens.
