Penman Ancestors of Lucy Maude Montgomery

By M.E. Cudmore September 11, 2004 at 10:01:12

Lucy Maude Montgomery, the world renowned author of "Anne of Green Gables" had two great grandmothers, both Penmans, Nancy and Betsy, daughters of George Penman and wife unknown. This family were United Empire Loyalists who ended up in Prince Edward Island, Canada and lived at Lot 13.According to family info passed down, George was supposed to be a Paymaster for the British Garrison in PEI.I am also descended from one of George Penman's other daughters, Margaret, who married John Ramsay.Lucy Maude Montgomery died in April 1942 but her books are more famous now then when she was alive."The Story Girl" tells of how the courtship and marriage of Betsy and Nancy Penman took place, but in the book she calls them the Sherman sisters, but reveals later in "The Alpine Path" exactly who she was talking about.Since her grandfather married his first cousin, whose mother was also a Penman, it explains how the two sisters ended up being Lucy Maude's two great grandmothers. If anybody has any connection to this George Penman family, please get in contact with me.
