Nona, I just came across your posting. My paternal grandmother was Johanna Penney, Jackson Co., Iowa. Her father was James Penney, and his father was Thomas Penney, we think from Co. Cork, not verified.Thomas became a citizen 28 March 1861 in Jackson Co, IA.Thomas also had a son John Penney, maybe a daughter who emigrated with them. Edw. MacLysaght's The Surnames of Ireland, Irish University Press, Shannon, Ireland, 1969 shows "Pennefather:This English name (from penny father) which has Pennyfeather, Panfare, etc. as variants, is of Cromwellian origin in Ireland. It has been prominent among the Anglo-Irish landed gentry in Munster and Leinster.Penny:this name was in Dublin as early as 1296.The numerous Pennys of Co. Cork are comparatively recent immigrants." Is any of this helpful to you?
