Sir John Perceval, 1st earl of Egmont, and 5th baronet born 22nd July 1683,was created baron Perceval,of Burton,April 21,1751;1772 viscount Perceval,of Kanturk; and 1735,advanced to the dignity of earl Egmont;his son John the 2nd Earl was appointed first Lord of the admiralty.Sept 10 1763 and again in Aug 1764. I was actually born in Kanturk which is in County Cork in Ireland and still own some property there. The main street is called Perceval street another is called Earl Street, Egmont House still stands although now it is divided into Apartments, there are many other items around the town connected to the Perceval family. It is doubtfull if any of the locals know that there is any connection to Spencer Perceval or the Earls of Egmont. In my copy of the 1819 Debretts the family at that time made the following reference to Spencer Perceval.
'The right hon,Spencer, born Nov 1,1762,chancellor of the exchequer and the dutchy of Lancaster:and in 1809, 1st Lord of the treasuary(now of course known as the prime minister) Married Aug 20 1790,Jane,2nd daughter of sir Thomas Wilson of Charlton,co.Kent.Mr Perceval was basely assinated in the lobby of the house of commons by John Bellingham, of Liverpool, May 11th who was executed for the same, May 18,1812' I actually own and live most of the time in a property quite close to the Charlton mentioned it is now in greater London its postal code being SE7. Some years ago workmen were repairing dry rot in the Church of St Luke's and one of them fell into the crypt, they then discovered that there were an estimated 100 members of the Perceval family laid to rest there including Spencer Perceval. The present Earl lives in Canada for various reasons the connection with Kanturk is not mentioned in whos who or the current Debretts.
