I was out on the internet just exploring and came accross the Ancestry.com site.I put in my family name and was amazed at the number of people that had responded.I am not very savy about dealing with the internet, but I did want to tell you that I am the daughter of Clifford Virn Pherigo, son of Thomas Pherigo that the Aaron Pherigo visited in Jonesburg, Missouri. My grandfather came from Putnam County and much of his family is buried there and in the surrounding counties. I visited the Pherigo Cemetary a few years ago with my brothers (someone has put up a very impressive sign accross the entry), visited the very very small town and met this wonderful lady who works in the Library in Putnam who had passed information back and forth with the son of one of my Grandfathers sisters. She helped us dig up information and even passed on some she had aquired.Sorry, I don't have the data in front of me to fill in names, its at home and I am at work. If you want more info please respond and I will do my best to get you what information we were able to find in the short time we were there.I did make copies of what I found.
My grandfather was part Cherokee as was my grandmother. His Father carried the indian genes, as his mother had an English maiden name. While he was a small child, she divorced his father and died soon after. She had been burning off a field next to her family farm to plant crops, the wind changed and her dress caught on fire.My Grandfather was with her and saw this.It took some time for anyone to get to her.She was burned horribly and suffered for a few days before dying. His Father had remarried and moved away by then, but they continued to stay in contact and did visit back and forth. When my grandfather Tom married my Grandmother, Orpha Mae Harlan Sullins, she was a divorced woman with a son.It seems they had been sweet on each other when younger, but Tom wasn't fast enough to catch her.Her Mothers maiden name was Lewis. If my memory serves me two of her sisters Married Pherigo brothers.I believe they are the two who were mentioned on the site.
Its quite hard to get much information now as most of the people with the knowledge are so old or dead.I too am getting up there and many of my own cousins have died.It seems the Pherigo clan has this problem with Cancer and heart disease.
I was watching The learning channel on night and there was a program on prisons in the South.A Mr. Pherigo was one of the guards there.I almost choked to hear our name.
We have tried to find out where the name came from but had no luck.I would like to research more, but time doesn't seem to allow it.
