I used Ancestry.com. Many libraries have subscriptions to that service which is fee-based. Libraries also have subscriptions to Heritage Quest. One of those is a good way to find INDEXED censuses.
It helped that they lived in a small town or near a small town.
Once they were found in one census, that provided clues to find other information.
I've done genealogy for almost eleven years, so practice also helps. ;-)
