Churchwell or Churchville Pettett., VA. 1810-1870
I'm seeking information on Churchwell (Mistakenly listed as "Churchville", etc.) in Hampshire County, VA. (Family #1333), 1850 Census, born about 1812.Children were James Pettet born about 1836, George Pettet born about 1838, Joseph Pettet born about 1842, Harriett Pettet born about 1845, and Robert Pettet born about 1849, and Taylor Pettet born about 1834.
Churchwell was my great-great grandfather, and I know from family history that he was a miller and store owner in or around Springfield/Romney, VA./WV around 1860.I have a bill of sale (incompleted) for various grains from Churchwell Pettett to Brig. General Bradley T. Johnson (CSA) dated August, 1864, Springfield, VA., just after Johnson's and Maj. General McCausland's retreat into "VA" after the burning of Chambersburg, PA. in July, 1864.His wife is listed in the 1850 Census as "Joanna Pettett", but my grandparents remembered her as "Hannah Pettett" born about 1800-1810."Hannah" was still living in 1900 (1900 Census with her son Taylor Pettet and his wife Martha "Lloyd" Pettet in Piedmont, WV."Hannah" Pettett, according to family history, lived in three centuries, being born in 1799/1800, and dying in 1901/1902.I have a phorograph of her fom around 1880, and it sure appears she could have continued having children till the age of 50.Any help appreciated.
