Pamela: I agree that it is very probable that Peleg and Jesse were brothers. James Petteys who died in the town of Charlestown,Montgomery Co NY in October 1826 named his children in Letters of Administration {at Fonda in Montgomery Co] : Oliver,James, Thomas, Jesse and Peleg and a daughter Betsy Porter[who had died and left 5 children in Indiana]. The problem is we haven't found any way to prove that these same Peleg, Jesse, Oliver, Joseph and David are all brothers and their sons. This elusive James we think is also the same James b. 1738 the son of William Petty who married Mary Winter, which would give us a clear line thru James Petty 1663-1712/13 and his father before him John Petty b. between 1635 and 1640 and died 1680 in Springfield Mass.Which makes a major leap back in the family tree....
It would be wonderful to find some kind of real proof, even thought we are all pretty darned sure its the same family!
If you are researching Petty lines extensively, I inherited a bunch of Petteys files swapped from other Petteys descendants..I am very happy to share expecially since most of the fistfuls are not my direct line. My mother kept them thinking someone else might need them and I hope someone does...Laura Wallenbeck
