My gg-grandfather was Charles Erwin Osgood, born abt. 1853, NY.He married Effie Jane Hulsaver abt. 1882 in Canajoharie. They had three children and were living in Westford MA in the 1900 census. With them was a George PETTIT Osgood, listed as "nephew".
George Pettit Osgood's marriage to Maud F. Young is filed in Cambridge, MA.The license states that that his father is Joseph A, and his mother is Zorah Hutchins.George Pettit was born 6 Apr 1881 in Canajoharie.Further, George Pettit's WWI draft card, lists "Effie Jane Osgood" as his contact person.
I suspect that George Pettit is the son of Joseph A. PETTIT, and Zorah Hutchins, but I don't know how the Osgood got tacked onto his name.
I do find a Joseph and Zeruah in the 1880 Canajoharie census indexed under "Peltel", with children James W; Charles L; Joseph A; Edward W; and Minnie Bell.
There is a connection to Osgood in that Charles Erwin Osgood's mother-in-law was Effie Hulsaver, born in Canajoharie. Her mother was Sophronia Bowen HUTCHINS-Hulsaver and in the 1870 census for Canajoharie, Zerasha Pettit was living with Sophronia and Effie Jane. Also, Sophronia's first marriage produced a daughter who is was always thought to be "Sarah" or "Ruah".Zerasha could be Sarah/Zorah and Effie Jane's 1/2 sibling, which would make George Pettit Effie Jane's nephew and not Charles Osgood's.
None of this explains how George Pettit ended up with the Osgood surname.I suppose that Joseph and Zorah probably died while the children were quite young, and those children likely ended up with other families and may have been adopted.
Does anyone have any information on this family of Pettits/Hutchins in NY?
