Robert Cleveland "Dock" Pettit (1852 - 1932), my gggrandfather, was the son of Benjamin (nicknamed Benjimmy) Pettit and Katie Belcher of Spartanburg and York Counties in South Carolina.Dock was orphaned after the Civil War.Benjimmy did not die in the Civil War, as many have assumed, but for some reason never came back to Spartanburg County.
This left Dock at about age 14 to 16 orphaned along with his siblings:Caroline Pettit (born 1853); Calvin Pettit (born 1854); John Pettit (born 1855); William Pettit (born in 1856 and found living with a group of 12 Pettits in Atala, Mississippi in the 1880 census); Martha Pettit (b. 1857); Emily Pettit (b. 1858) and Chaney Pettit (b. 1859).
YOUR HELP ON THESE QUESTIONS PLEASE:1) What happened to Katie Belcher? She just disappeared after the Civil War. 2) What happened to the siblings of my gggrandfather, Dock Pettit?3) Who raised Dock Pettit and his seven brothers and sisters?4) Why did Benjimmy never come back to his wife and eight children? He signed an oath of allegiance to the United States in April, 1865 in Northern Virginia but just disappeared after this.Any information about this?
