William, the book is "Our Kin" "The Genealogies of some of the early families who made history in the founding and development of Bedford County Virginia by Mary Denham Ackerly and Lula Eastman Jeter Parker". I only have the Clayton portion of the book and cannot comment on the other families covered by it. Most of my comments come from the book and the wealth of information at the Bedford county website. Unfortunately, I have not worked on the Claytons for over a year, and cannot find my correspondence with the descendants of Marys daughter Elizabeth Catherine Clayton Markham, who advised me of Mary being a Pettus. As to Pettus Overton Clayton, he is my brick wall, and should be lightly considered. He was in the right place at the right time, and the only Clayton that cannot be tied to the other Claytons in Bedford Co., at that time, all of whom descend from John and Mary. I believe he was disenherited. Let me know what you think, and if I can help.
