Several family genealogy sites have listed Samuel Overton Pettus as having died in Texas at the battle of San Jacinto. Not so, folks.Samuel Overton Pettus was wounded at the Battle of Coleto Creek, Mar. 19, 1836. He was brought to LaBahia (mission)at Goliad, Tx.and executed with other wounded on Mar. 27, 1836 when Col. Fannin and hundreds of others were massacred. He is buried in a common grave under the monument at LaBahia. John Freeman Pettus fought at the battle of San Jacinto and survived the War of Independence as did William Pettus. All of these Pettuses or their heirs were given land grants in Texas and their descendants still live there today.
