Thanks for your interest in my forthcoming book. You mentioned that you are descended from Stephen Pettus by way of his daughter Susanna who married Evan Ragland. I have not seen any original document actually proving that Evan's wife was Stephen's daughter, but circumstantial evidence, including the names of Evan's descendants, does indicate an early Ragland-Pettus marriage. You didn't mention which Thomas Pettus you had in mind when you identified him as Stephen's father, but I suppose that you were thinking of Thomas Pettus of Norwich, England, who was in Virginia by 1642 as a member of the Council of State. So far as I am aware, no record has turned up to show that Thomas married in England before coming to Virginia, much less that he was Stephen's father. I do have evidence, however, proving that Thomas had a cousin named Stephen Pettus, born in England. My guess is that he was in Virginia by 1637, but proving that guess is probably impossible, given the extensive loss of early Virginia records. My book will have a thorough discussion of the subject, which is one of the more complicated and difficult problems in Pettus genealogy. By the way, I now have about 7,500 end notes documenting statements of fact in my book.
