Hello everyone.I am researching my ancestors, who were African-American, from the Richmond, Texas area that may have been owned by Dr. John R. Pettus and his wife, Mary E. Smith-Pettus.
I beleive that a former slave named Giles Pettus and his wife, Martha, were both slaves of on the Pettus Plantation in Richmond, TX. Also, my ggAunt Emeline was Mary Smith-Pettus' servant in the early 1870's.Further, I have 3 contracts between my gggGrandparents, Harriett and Robert, dated 1871, '72, and '73 where they rented 30 acres of land from Dr. William G. and Mary Pettus.
BTW:Giles indicated on the 1900 census that he was born in 1791 in VA.However, on the 1870 and '80 census he indicated that he was born in Alabama.I believe that Giles may be the brother of my gggGrandmother, Harriett, who was born in Alabama as was her Mother.
During your research of the Pettus Family, have any of you come across any documentation that mentioned any of the slaves in Texas or Virginia/Alabama that were taken to Texas? Any info, clues, or leads about wills, estate inventories, family papers, etc. that may assist in my research will be greatly appreciated. I am most anxious to learn as much as I can.
