Early in June, I merged all twelve index databases for volume 1 into one master database and then sorted the records so that all index terms were in alphabetical order and multiple records for the same index term were in page number order. The next step was to consolidate multiple records for the same index term by copying the various page numbers into one record and deleting the redundant records. This has been a tedious process that is still ongoing, though I have cycled through at least once.
In many cases, the name of an individual is not unique (e.g., Thomas Pettus). In those cases, I will include some modifier, such as a birth date, death date, occupation, or location, to distinguish among those individuals. Again, this is a tedious process.
My goal is to produce an index that conforms to principles set forth in Indexing Family Histories by Patricia Law Hatcher and John V. Wylie. This booklet is available from the National Genealogical Society.
I hope to finish the master index database for volume 1 this month. When completed, I can easily convert the database into a word document with the right format for an index. After adding page numbers to the index pages, volume 1 will be complete and ready to publish.
