I have been trying to sort out these early Pettways and am glad to see someone else is working on them.
Edward Pettway who died in 1690 was married to Elizabeth, widow of William Cartar Jr. Surry County Virginia Deed Book I contains an agreement between Edward Pettway and Alice Cartar concerning land bequeathed by Alice's husband Wm. Cartar Senior to his son Wm. Cartar Junior, recorded 18 Dec. 1655.It says Edward Pettaway is now married to Elizabeth, relict of Wm Cartar Jr.
This is a transcription of Edward's will in Surry County Order Book 1671-1691 Part I, page 782. To daughter Eliza, wife of Samuel Judkins, 20 shillings. To daughter Joyce, wife of Bartholomew Brittle, 10 shillings. To daughter Fortune Pettway, certain household goods if she does not marry Will: Huggins; if she does, only 10 shillings. To Sarah, daughter of Robert Judkins, a hog. To son, Wm. Pettway, all my estate & he is named exor. 27 Oct. 1690. Proved Jan 6, 1690/91. Wit. Wm Iles, Theoph. Forbush, Honor Blake.
I think Edward's son William is the one who married Elizabeth Rawlings. His will, written 15 Dec 1696, names 3 sons, Robert, Edward, and William. He leaves provision so that if his wife be with child and it is a man child, he will inherit land. One of the witnesses was Joyce Brittle, who was named in Edward's will, leading me to believe this is her brother.William's will was presented at court March 1, 1699/1700. Roger Rawling's will (Elizabeth's father), written 19 Sep. 1694, leaves a bequest to William Petway's 4 sons. I have only seen a transcription of his will and do not know if he named the sons. I haven't see any mention of daughters. (That doesn't mean he didn't have any.)
I am descended from William's son Robert, Robert's son Edward, Edward's daughter Phoebe, who married first her double first cousin Robert Pettway and then Richard Harwell, my ancestor.
I have lots more Roberts, Williams, Edwards, Elizabeths, etc. in the 18th century. Would love to have help in trying to piece them together!
