The Pettway lineage extends in two different directions. There are the Pettways that originated from England(slave owners) and the Pettway's that originated in Africa via Gees Bend, Al and surronding areas. The way the story goes is that, Mark Pettway in the late 1800's traveled over 700 miles with his family, and slaves to gees bend al, where a relative Joseph Gee, owned property and slaves as well. Joseph Gee and Mark Pettway decided to(Gee died)combined their slaves, and gave them all the last name Pettway. This is a abbreviated version, but the story exists in print and on the internet. The Pettway's that originated from Africa, can trace their heritage back to two clans, either the ones' from North Carolina, or the group that was there before the 1850's. I am in the process of doing a complete family history. Whats interesting is that the residents of Gees Bend to this day, are all directly related to the original Pettway's that were in slavery as well as the African American Pettway's that reside elsewhere.
