I'm descended from Phaneufs who emigrated to RI between 1880-1890. The immigrant generation was Joseph Phaneuf and his wife, whose name is recorded variously as Justine Dumas or Julia Shuman (it is the same person--I've confirmed this with birthdates). In some cases, the "dit" surname of Lapointe is also recorded for her surname.
At any rate, they had settled in Manville (now a part of Lincoln), RI by 1890. I do not know if they had any Woonsocket connection, though it would certainly not be unusual. I have only been able to confirm one child of this marriage--my direct ancestor, Pierre Phaneuf who was born in Longueil, PQ in 1868.
Not sure where you are in your research, but I have Pierre's line traced back to the 1600s and would be happy to share it with you. Do you have any information on generations prior to Malvina? Perhaps we could establish a connection in that way. The Phaneufs have a very interesting beginning in North America.
