METRO FIELD (b. 1875, Galicia, d. After 1930, Butler, PA)
Greetings!
I am searching for information about the following family:
Metro Field was born about 1875, Galicia (historical region in the Poland/Ukraine/Austria region in E. Europe). He came to America in 1902 or 1899.He married Martha (maiden name unknown) in 1905 and was listed on the 1910, 1920, and 1930 Butler County, PA censuses.Census records he spoke Slovak, while his wife spoke both Slovak and English. One one census, he is listed as "John".
Martha was born in 1882, Galicia, and also immigrated around 1902.She died between 1924 and 1930, Butler County, PA.
Their children are:
Michael Fieldb. 1902, Galicia (possibly by an unknown first wife)
Mary Fieldb. 1905, Butler, PA
Catherine "Katie" Fieldb. 1908, Butler, PA
Anna Fieldb. 1911, Butler, PA
Eva Fieldb. 1914, Butler, PA
John Fieldb. 1916, Butler, PA
Andrew Fieldb. 1921, Butler, PA
Rosemary Fieldb. 1924, Butler, PA
Family lore states that the surname was changed to Field from an unknown Eastern European surname when they were processed through immigration, although, it appears that most immigrants' names were kept as close to their originals as possible. However, since we cannot locate any immigration record of Metro, it is still an unproven story. The German word for "field" is feld or felden, and the Polish word is pole, polny, polowy, or niwa.It is possible that it is a corruption of another Germanic or Slovak surname, such as Phiel.
If you have ANY information on this family, we would love to hear from you!
Thanks,
Travis Self
