Looking fot the family or information about Clarence G. Philips.
Born Nov. 1866 in Florida. His mother Ellen F. (Benton) Philips had no children and since she married Nathan (or) Matthew Philips in 1859, so I assume that Clarence was adopted as a baby, (his name may have come from her half brother Clarence and the MI from her father George).
The 1900 census shows Clarence G. living with widowed Ellen in South Jacksonville, along with what I assume to be his wife of one year, Elvinita ??? not sure I'm reading it correctly, born Dec. 1876.
A Florida land record has a Clarence G. Philips, homesteading a 160 acre section new Gainsville in Dec. 1898.If this is the same person, he did not re-locate to it until after the 1900 census which was in January 1900.
By 1910, Ellen now 73 and 1920 at 83 is living alone in Jacksonville. No sign of Clarence.
Ellen was a half sister to my grandfather Clarence U.V. Benton. She was the daughter of George Washington Benton, who went by Washington Benton while he lived in Jacksonville from about 1852 to 1866.He was a physician, and lived with his family, wife Eliza, daughter Harriet born in Ohio, sons Sidney and Clarence both born in Florida. They are listed in the 1860 Duval Co. census.
