I am a descendant of Zachariah Phillips who died in Amherst Co VA in 1807.His wife was named Frances White and they had 10 children born in the 1760s and 1770s, but none of them were named Isabella or Richard. My cousin has posted our family tree on rootsweb at this link: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=vapsmith&id=I0233http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=vapsmith&id=I0233
I checked my early Phillips timeline for Amherst County and found two references to men named Mays as follows:
3/6/1775, Richard Ballenger and wife Elizabeth of Amherst County to Abraham Moore of Amherst County for £65, 232 acres, part of patent to Joseph Ballenger and by him conveyed to Richard.Lines: Ballinger’s Mountain, Joseph Mays. Wit: Hush Rose, Edmund Wilcox, John Phillips.
8/1778, The case of Thomas Phillips against Joseph Mays was dismissed at Defendant’s cost
According to tax lists, Richard Phillips appears for the first time in Amherst Co VA in 1807, and we know from the 1850 census that he was born about 1776 in Botetourt Co VA.He bought 150 acres on the Tye River from John and Elizabeth Alford in 1806.This land was part of the Conyers White estate. We don't know how or even if this Richard Phillips was related to our Zachariah Phillips. However, we do believe that Conyers or Cornelius White was the brother of our Frances White.
