October 6, 1828-James H. Philyaw is born to James Philyaw Jr. and Levina Davis. Some records put his birth as 1823, which is probably closer to correct.

1842-James Jr's will mentions wife Levina and the following children: James H, Owen (James Owen), Minerva, Nancy, Hester White,Hepsy Little. Supposedly, there is another daughter, Rachel, who was disowned by the family for marrying Benjamin Cowel on Nov.24, 1840.James Jr. does not die until sometime after 1846. James Owen contests will but does not win.

--------------------------------------------
Sept.1847 Rachel Philyaw Cowel petitions court about the will of James Philyaw Jr.
James H. is called to court to testify when she contests the will. Supposedly, $1000 is left after debts are paid and she wants a share (James Jr. got all land and money left)
Not sure of outcome, but sister Nancy Philyaw left all her possessions to Rachel Philyaw Cowel in her will dated March31, 1848.
---------------------------------------------
James H. Philyaw marries Rachel King in 1848 and marriage bond exists. However, Rachel King dies early in marriage because James H. later marries Mary Clara Jarman by 1849. Their first daughter Clara is shown as 1 year old in 1850 census. No marriage bond has been found for Mary Clara Jarman.
Their children together are Clara, Zachariah Wilson "Jack" Philyaw, John Robert, Nancy Jane "Nance Jean" Philyaw, Frederick, and David William Philyaw. James H. Philyaw dies on June 17, 1901. Mary Clara Jarman, born on March 22, 1822 (daughter of Robert Jarman)and died on Oct.25, 1883. There are some records which indicate a third marriage or relationshiip with Nancy Jarman, Mary Clara's sister and a child Moses Jarman born of that relationship in 1857, but I believe that is a mistake, as Mary clara did not die until 1883. The 1900 census does, however, show Nancy living with James H. Philyaw and two of his grandchildren by John Robert's first marriage.
I hope some of these records are helpful. I am still researching land records and hope to add many more details.
